Scott Guthrie recently posted the plans of releasing source of many base class libraries with VS 2008. Blog Link. Also, a MS hosted symbol server will be supported.

Hopefully, it will be something more that the shared source CLI SSCLI Link.

You might already know that for the time being, developers have been using some free tools for managed source code extraction from binaries - which really helps if you want to understand MS implementations. Looks like things will be much simpler in future.
