I think the most important thing to consider is, what you want to accomplish once you get out of a top university. Lets take Berkeley for example, its rated among the top 10 in computer science but its admission criteria is very stringent.They may require a very high GRE score and some excellent recommendation letters.

The idea is to come to graduate program that is respected in the field and not just being attached to a name such as Stanford. If you can afford and get admitted to Stanford, its good and dandy but the point is, comparing an enterpruner from Stannford, someone who attend University of Texas at Austin has started a technology company too. In the end, it really doesn't matter which school you went to, its graduate program that needs to be good.
