University of California has recently started its new campus in Merced,
and are expanding and developing new programs each year. They are now
expanding their post-graduate for Masters and Ph.D. So far, by a policy
decision, they are not taking any fee-paying students for these
programs and only seats with full grants have been approved. They are also
offering guaranteed part-time work to the students of $18,000 per year.
The faculty is the core faculty of the highest quality, because each
department will be built around these faculty members. Each faculty has a
limited 4-5 grant-student positions available, which is a great boon
for the selected students considering the amount of mentoring they will
get. Also there is a proactive effort by faculty members to recruit
foreign students from Muslim countries. This is to counter the huge drop in
the number of Muslims from abroad coming to US for higher education
after 911. The Grad student recruitment officials are planning a trip to
Malaysia, Indonesia, India, Pakistan and to Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and
Qatar to actively recruit students from these countries. This is also the
first year (Aug 2008) that international students will be accepted at
